can you ID any bit of crown material that was left on the bottom???

but i would hesitate to jump to any truisms.. based on an experiment with undulata ... it is the true driveway plant... weed-like in its ability to live on the driveway with no soil all summer ....

now if you can root a plant barely any of us can grow.. like great under-expectations .... then we have proof that they will all root ..

i didn't consider this an experiment. i've rooted pieces of others (francee, for example) in the past. just didn't think to take pictures before.

would have thrown these pieces out (there are several more rooting) but for the fact that i'm trying to fill in a border.

I have rooted bits and pieces of all manner of things, golden edger, antioch, September Sun Krossa Regal, golden tiara.
If there is a scrap of crown left. they will root.

I've done that too. I find they root better if oxygen is supplied. So I threw a bunch of crown pieces in a bucket with a little bubble stone (many people use them in aquaria) and I had a whole bucket full of rooted toddler hostas in about 4 weeks. Most of them had sent up leaves too. I think the most difficult one was American Halo, which was very very stubborn and took about 10 weeks. But I do agree that Great Expectations would be the ultimate test, or Brother Stephan.
