That is quite surprising since they like to perch in a secluded spot Im guessing your feeder is in a similar location.

Nightbloomer, seeing that your favorite forum is balcony gardening, is your feeder located relatively far away from other sheltered perching spots the hummer could have used?

My feeder is on a third floor balcony. I am in a regular suburban apartment area. There are trees, bushes and brush nearby. This is probably where the other birds go that use the feeder (several dozen). My wife suspects the bird who spent the night is the male, who defends one or more of the three feeders (depending on the mob size). She thinks he still tries to stay somewhere on the porch but might be disturbed by our activities sometimes.The feeder he spent the night on is one foot away from a sliding glass patio door.
