There isn't a lot you can do until the spring thaw finally arrives for us up here in the Northern part of the country. I don't look for any hummers up are way until the end of April or first part of May at the earliest depending on how the weather cooperates. As soon as it warms up at least during the days I will put out my impatiens and fuschias and some salvia until my early perennials kick in. But if it is still going down at night I will have to bring the plants inside. I will have two feeders out by then also.

Hi Rachelle! I'm over here north of Muskegon, my first hummer showed up the last week in April last year and I had about a dozen regulars (that I know of) up untill October. I expect more to stick around this year because I planted a lot of native flowering plants for them. I have my feeders ready to put out for them and I will get some hanging baskets and pots of flowers just as soon as the stores have them out! My Blue Birds are here and checking out nest boxes so the Hummers wont be too far behind! Bring it on! I'm ready!!!!!!(now if my fish pond would just thaw out!)

I feel for you Rachelle!
I'm in Grand Rapids near the city, and am so thankful when I spot a hummer. I bought a Hummingbird feeder last summer,.. the aunts found it and made a nasty mess. It got clogged up with dead aunt bodies.
But what really brought the hummers in was my hanging Fuschia in a tree. It was an all RED variety, don't know it's name.
I wish I kept the tag, because I'd love to get another one this season.

In Ottawa, Canada, we first see the hummers in mid to late May. Not unlike what everyone else says, when they first arrive, we don't have much in the way of flowers. Right now, I have crocuses in bud (not open yet) and a few snowdrop leaf tips showing about one inch out of the ground. The sunny spots in my garden are bare of snow but the shady part are still covered. The little guys nest here - it's really fun later in August when the babies start visiting the feeders. Like a jet plane aerobatics team! By the 3rd week in September, they are gone again.

Hey Heather is Fruit Basket Flower Land still open on 28th st? I always got red fucias there, just havent lived there in quite a few years.

I hate this early season wait. I even put capri pants on my daughter today for school. I don't care what the weather is I am putting my feeders out soon. I know that means that I will make myself crazy watching it. But I will start looking anyways.
I got more action out of my salvia then anything else. Red hot or fire poker, something like that.
