I had the Bat-faced cuphea and my hummers used it a lot. this year I am also trying Cuphea Ignea and I know they will also use that a lot. Bat-faced did well in morning sun and afternoon shade for me. Ignea does well in full sun I believe.

I had Bat-Faced Cuphea, Cuphea Ignea, and Twinkle Pink Cuphea last year. The hummers used them all. I over wintered them in a Sun Room. The Twinkle Pink has bloomed on and off all winter, the other 2 are a bit scraggly but have not died. I am going to give them a shot of Miricle Grow today to see if they perk up. I am hoping it gets warm soon so I can put them outside.

The standard Cuphea ignea didn't work for me last year - the flowers kept catching the hummers beaks and scaring them. Cuphea 'David Verity', which I guess is an ignea hybrid, apparently has slightly larger flowers. Other hummer gardeners who have had problems with ignea report good success with this hybrid. Micropetela is also supposed to be an excellent hummer plant. The problem with it is that it doesn't bloom until late in the summer. This year I'll be ordering David Verity and maybe a single micropetela.

I also have the following growing in the garden: Cuphea llavea (Bat Face Cuphea), Cuphea melvillea (Candy Corn), Cuphea micropetala (Giant Candy Corn), and two unidentified Cupheas. They like all of them. The only one that I wouldn't consider to be attracting to hummingbirds is Cuphea hyssopifolia (False Heather, or Mexican Heather). I've seen them feed from them, but they generally fly right past them.
