It looks like I am in zone 3b, last year I noticed that there are a few of those columbine flowers growing wild in my back yard a few feet away from where I made the flower bed last fall, will it be worth it to make the garden? Do humming birds even come around this area? I have never seen one here.

Hummers do indeed come to Minn. and a garden planted with hummer attracting plants will not only beautify your yard but will provide natural nectar and insects for hummers. You do have to be patient if you haven't already seen any. It may take a couple of seasons for them to find you or they may find you right away if they are nearby.

If you are buying established plants then you would plant them at the appropriate time for your zone. If you plan to grow them from seed you should start now and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

I think I will grow the plants from seeds, is there anything I can do to attract the hummingbirds while I wait for the flowers to grow and bloom?

Hang feeders and get some 5 paks of red impatiens as soon as they are available. They will probably take too long to bloom in time for their return. Put the impatiens in haanging baskets. i grow most of my plants from seed but I also do put out fuschia plants in spring as soon as the temps are about 55 or 60 during the day and bring them in at night.

My last post was quickly written so I didn't explain too well. I buy 8 paks of impatiens when they are available and put them in hanging baskets (3 to a pot). I also usually buy a couple of Fuschia garenmeister bonstadt plants and put each in a hanging basket these two plants along with whatever perennials are blooming and the feeders is what keeps my babies going until the other plants I grow from seed kick in. This year I took cuttings of my fuschias and rooted them so now I have over 12 new fuschias to add to the two I already had. Last year I also put out a couple of containers of Million Bells. In early spring I have Bleeding hearts blooming, and native columbine and coral bells along with my Rhododendron.
