does anybody know this plant?

I saw a medium green colored plant with white hibiscus- like blooms. The size range was between three and six + feet tall with large spade-shaped leaves. The spiky cherry-sized seed case which fell into my hand had dark seeds like the rose of sharon. The important thing is that the hummers like it. Does it sound like any native you know or an introduction? Should I plant it at the back of one of my beds for hummers? It was blooming late in the year when I saw it around a friend's new home.

I checked out the Missouri Botanical Gardens website and found that Chaenomeles x superba 'Jet Trail' is a possibility. It's a beautiful plant!

It does bloom in March in your Zone. You may want to do a Goog search to see if this is the plant.

Couldn't it actually be a hibiscus? There are many varieties, and hummers do use them.

Flowering quince is less likely if the plant was blooming late in the year. A picture would help quite a bit, or try the Name That Plant forum.

Mbuckmaster, I assumed from her statement that she saw it recently. I didn't think hibiscus would be blooming in her zone this time of year.

You're right, the Name That Plant forum would probably get Bloomingplantlover, an answer quicker. They're amazing over there when it comes to naming a plant, and fast.

Yes, a picture would help.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I haven't seen this plant since September when the sun was shining. Now that I know about this website I wish I had taken a picture to share with you. I will look at the Missouri Botanical website and the Plant ID area you all mentioned.

Mark, sorry I referred to you as 'her' in my earlier posts. That's just so politically incorrect. LOL!

Please, don't keep up hanging if you do find out the name of this plant. You have our curiousity up.

Also, later on down the road, probably years from now, some newbie like me will happen upon this thread and be upset because the mystery wasn't solved at the end.

If you saw the plant in September, it is a very good chance that it is a hibiscus or possibly a rose of sharon. Both bloom late in the season.
