hummer beginner, I posted this article earlier, in anticipation of the freeze, but it didn't get much response. The article suggests two different ways to heat your feeder. I'm not sure I completely understand it myself, but maybe you can make sense of it. One method involves using a lamp for heat, the other one a plumber's heating tape.

As long as actual temperatures stay at or above 27 degrees, your 4:1 sugar water mixture should stay liquid. Adding sugar to water lowers its freezing point, just like salt in the winter time helps to melt snow. If you're at 4:1, you also might consider temporarily increasing the strength to 3:1 water to sugar. That should make the freezing point even lower and also provide more energy for those cold birds. I'm not sure the wind chill really matters that much. It's the actual temperature that counts. If it's 32 degrees, and there's a howling wind and a wind chill of 15 degrees, your solution will still not freeze. 23 degrees and no wind chill, it would.

I am worried about the Hummingbirds freezing, I think that I have the feeders taken care of but wondered if I could make a shelter for the birds, and if so what kind? They are sitting on a small trellis by the side of the house, I have put up a wind block but still worry about the night time cold.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. I guess no one on planet earth finds that article on warming feeders any use at all.

It sounds like you're doing the best you can. They can usually survive freezing temperatures as long as they get enough food during the day. It's a good thing that they've been smart enough to get close to your house and out of the wind. Putting up the wind block was a good idea. Do you have a space heater that could stand being outside on an extension cord? Short of that, I don't know what else you could do. Install an infrared heating lamp with a screen over the front? I wonder if they would huddle next to it? I just don't know.

Really, as long as you keep them well fed, they should make it without any extra measures. Let us know how they do, but I really do think they have a good chance of making it.

Maybe someone else has a better idea.
