Hummingbird Garden

hummer in sw florida this late?

Yesterday I looked out my window and saw a hummingbird. So I mixed up some sugar water and put out the feeder. Today, the bird visited the feeder.

This happened April 22nd in Sarasota County in SW Florida on the Gulf Coast.

What I want to know is if this hummer is a resident breeder or just passing through. Does the Ruby-Throated's breeding range include Southwest Florida?

I'd appreciate any input from hummingbird experts on this question.

Im not an expert but if you look on Lanny's map it shows the bottom third of florida is not normally in the breeding range but he still has two dots in extremely southern florida. All I can say is have the feeder out and maybe it will stay.

If you go to www.hummingbird.net, this is a site that Steve has for people in Florida. Post there and I am sure you will get more feedback. He lives nears Valicro and several of my friends here in Lakeland had birds till just recently.
