Im sorry to hear yours have left. I dont know how to ID a blackchinned maybe you can tell me the difference between it and a rubythroated. But if a rufous showed up in any yard in the midwest or northeast area you can bet a bander would be notified.

From the pictures I sent the bander, she thinks its a female Black Chinned. The description in my book for a female is dull green to golden green above forecrown dull gray to grayish tan. Pale gray below sides washed gray-green. Cheek dull gray. Throat unmarked or with variable dusky streaking. Tail square to slightly notched or double rounded extends slightly beyond wingtips. Bill long slightly to moderatley decurved.

The one I had had little green and the bill seemed really long compared to the Rufous and Rubies. Also the tail seemed longer. If you go do a search for posts by mboston, you will find a couple that have pictures of my hummers this year. Please check them out. "Gracee" as I named her, left here around the 29th of March. She isn't banded.

Breeding areas are south-central Mexico thru western half Texas, southern & western OK,NM, Ar,Utah, and some of CO.

It is considered the western counterpart of the Ruby.

I guess they are seeing more of them in GA and FL than in the past in the winters.
