All penstemon flowers contain nectar, but it varies in the quantity, quality, and how it is released depending on the species. Bee pollinated penstemons (blue, purple, white colored and fatter in diameter) release a less concentrated solution of nectar and in smaller quantities but released more frequently during the day to increase visitation by bees for pollination. Hummingbird pollinated penstemons (red, pink flowered with tubular blossoms) release nectar as a more concentration solution and in greater quantities but less frequently during the day. So to answer your question, yes, they all produce nectar, but the hummingbird pollinated varieties are those with red or pink flowers that are tubular in shape (e.g., barbatus, psuedospectabilis, pinifolius, etc.).

Have a direct afternoon sun area where I am looking to plant some P. pinifolius and a female RT that is already attracted to the area with a feeder (she thinks she owns the front yard). The problem is that I have not been able to find pinifolius and question if it is a good option for a front yard garden in Chicago area (northwest of the city)? Any help would be appreciated.
