I am in NW Ohio and like you, on the look out. I've had a feeder out for about 10 days, however, my neighbor, hasn't put her's out yet, stating it is a bit to early. I'm new at this but she is an old hand.

Bless crackers and cheese, I saw my first one this eve, approx. 8:30 pm. while sitting in my dining area. I am never in this area this late in the evening. Could not believe my eyes, but he or she returned several times, I was to excited to move close to the window for a better view.
I have a friend from out of state who arrived for a visit today, needless to day I'm thrilled thrilled by both bird and man.

p.s. I took a clue from another forum and the solution I have in the feeder, is 1:1 sugar and water, it was suggested to use this proportion to induce them, and then reduce the ratio, after a week or so.

I would never use a 1:1 sugar water ratio and you will not find that recommended on any of the hummingbird sites. Lanny Chambers who runs www.hummingbirds.net and Bill Hilton from Operation Ruby Throat, SHeri Williamson from SABO and all the banders I know across the country will tell you that the best solution is either 3:1 or 4:1. I use 3:1 during spring and fall and switch for 4:1 if or when it gets really hot.

Hi Penny1947, thanks for the info and referral to other resources/experts I will certainly be reading and learning more. As I stated I am new to Hummingbirds; have now had a bit of success in attracting them to my feeder and will not be reducing the ratio.
The 1:1 ratio was used to attract them to the feeder, not a long term feeding program

i live near pitts, pa still no birds have had my feeders out for a few days lived here 4 summers and i hav had so many they are so wonderful to watch ,but they can be mean to each other funny thanks for all the input i have enjoyed it and have learned alot
