Completely Heart Broken!!!

My mom and I are so heartbroken!!! On May 5th we discovered a hummingbird and bo, building a nest right outside our window. We're not sure yet if she's the same little hummer that built a nest in our tree last year as well. Anyway...last night I checked the nest and everything was great! No eggs, but the nest was ready. I managed to snap a few pics of it since the mama was away. This morning I went to check on it and it was partially destroyed. Then we found a splattered little egg on the bricks below. Her first egg was destroyed along with her nest! We thought maybe it was a rat, but realized it was actually an avocado that came right down smack and hit it.

I just saw her come back. She tried sitting in her nest but couldnt, and she poked at it. She looked upset, she knew something wasn't right. Then she took off! What happens next? Will she re-build? Lay a new egg(s)???? I tried sewing it back together, and giving it some form, so maybe that will help hold it together, so she can build up around it. I hope she doesn't give up or go elsewhere. We're soooo sad :O(

Oh my Gosh Tania, that is one of the saddest things I have ever read!!!! You must be so heartbroken......I would be devastated also. Please keep us all posted!!!! I hope and pray she will come back!!!!

I was touched to read of your efforts to sew the nest back together. I hope it works, but my guess is that she will rebuild elsewhere, and try again. Let's all hope she has better luck the next time!

And yes, please do keep us posted. What a sad thing! I'm not absolutely sure about hummingbirds, but most birds will renest after such tragedies, so please take heart.

A friend of mine had a hummer build a nest a few years in a row, behind one of her shutters outside her bedroom window. Hopefully if this little hummer likes where she was building, she will try again. Hopefully the same tragedy will not repeat itself.

Don't be sad,be glad the bird wasn't in the nest when the avocado fell on it.....could have been mashed hummer and eggs for breakfast

That is sad, she's probably done with her egg-laying for the year...I hope you left the nest in place, it is common for hummers to reuse their nests more than one season, after a few touch-ups. Hopefully you can put up a small tarp or something to prevent this accident from happening next year.
