Rhino Hide - darn rabbit

and dog! Last year I bought Rhino Hide. Every morning I take the dogs for a long walk in the fields to tire them out, then we go into the garden, they lay down and I start to work. Rosie stays put but the slightest movement will trigger Riley into action. Unfortunately half and hour after we got into the garden Riley saw a rabbit. He jumped up and took off after it - right over my new RH. Rosie, who usually won't move, took off after him with high pitched yipping, and also ran over RH. All I found of it was a leaf so I thought he had just broken it off and it would come back, it never did. This spring I found the dried roots. I took them inside and soaked them overnight in tepid water being careful not to let the crown go underwater. It is slowly plumping up. Should I keep soaking it to let it plump up more or do you think it's a goner? I was planning on potting it up inside and keeping my fingers crossed.

I am sorry of you loss. I just got Rhino Hide this year. I am not trying to make light of your situation but maybe you need to hire a professional for that darn wabbit.

Must be a spring thing. We have a squirrel that makes a visit and our male daschund has been ripping through the hosta under the tree he was caught up in. If he doesn't leave , I may have to resort to the Elmer method. Yelling at the dog doesn't seem to work for long. Leo spent all day with the treed squirrel and never even stopped for a drink of water.

Rosie does the same thing that Leo does. She'll tree the squirrels but then she just sits under the tree and looks up at the nest and dares them to come down. We have a ton of rabbits here but DH took the fence down to enlarge the garden so they're getting into the existing garden. Hope he gets the fence back up soon.

Remember, Rhino Hide is a late emerger.

I put in a small one eyed Rhino Hide last year.. as of now I am seeing two fair sized pips, so with some luck I will have a few big leathery leaves out there to examine ! I have never seen a Rhino Hide in person other than my little sprout last year.

aWWWW, that is sad news. I have pots knocked over and a doggie nibble on the leaves occasionally, but so far, nothing broken or jumped over or thoroughly trounced

And my older doxie girl sat all day at the base of a tall pine stump (20 feet tall) watching a squirrel all day too, Fay. Then that night I think her neck was stiff. She'll be 7 this Memorial Day.

About the Rhino Hide,I'm so sorry yours was broken so badly. I now have two and both added multiple eyes this spring. It seems to be a strong grower, and may make a miraculous recovery. With me, it's the Eskimo Pie that's on the critical list.

I recommend growing it in a container for a while at least.

I just checked on my RH and the roots are no longer a dull grey but white. It's also very pliable now. In another day I may just pot it up and see what happens.

    Marric,

If you have a viable piece of the crown attached to some roots then RH will come back. It'll be small, but it will come back.

Thanks Steve. That's what I was hoping for. Marg
