Thanks for asking. I use a Nikon D70 DSLR. These were shot with a 70-300mm VR lens. VR is Nikon's anti-shake system. VR=Vibration Reduction.

I also use a speedlight in manual set to 1/8th power to freeze the wings a bit. When I have more time I want to set the flash up off camera, closer to the feeder to get better lighting.

The rest is patience and perseverance. It's hard to focus on something moving that fast so I usually prefocus on the feeder and leave the camera in manual. This means some shots aren't as in focus as they should be if the hummer is a little closer or a little farther away from the focal plane I've pre-set. But over time I get some good ones.

Although I do manage to get AF lock on one now and then. It helps when they stop though.
