Where you have your feeder is fine. Where in NY are your grandparents? Some places are late seeing them and some are early. It depends on which wind wave they used to head north this spring. They use the spring air currents that come up from the gulf to help them along on their journey if they can. Since you have seen one then they are in your area and if there is any japanese honeysuckle blooming anywhere then that is where yours is right now. Be patient I am sure you will see more in a few weeks.

I am between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, My hummers returned on May 10th this year but another person I know that lives just a few miles from me has not seen his hummers yet. Another one in West Seneca which is on the other side of Buffalo from me has not seen ay hummers either. So they are still not quite established in their territories yet.

I live on the border of south buffalo West Seneca, my hummingbird is back... I am so happy.

I haven't seen any in NC yet. I saw on http://www.hiltonpond.org that they finally saw a couple last week but still haven't caught one to band yet.

If the Japanese honeysuckle is blooming in NC. you may have to wait a while longer to see them if there is any near where you live.

Yes, I put one of our feeders out about a week ago and that was where I found him. Usually our first sighting finds them at one of our plants, and only then have I put the feeder out. I keep meaning to put it out before I see them, and finally this year I did. Some of the reports I was seeing here was the nudge I needed.

Last year the first sighting was through the kitchen window where he was giving me the evil eye and sending me a "hey slacker, get off your duff and get that feeder out here, stat! That honeysuckle is still weeks away from blooming" message. Or at least that's how I imagined it.

I have had numerous visits. They are short and far between. I think these are birds just passing by on the migration or searching for nesting sites. My residents from last year couldn't resist my honeysuckle which is in full bloom now.

I put my first feeder out at least 2 weeks before I ever see the first one. In fact there were quite a fiew hummer reports in Mass b4 I saw my first one this year.
