Not too late!!! You can put out feeders anytime in the season. I've done it after many moves!!! Hope you get one soon!! Christy

You are not too late in fact just about right as hummers are still moving north. At least thats what I find in my just south of indy location.

I'm 30 miles upriver from you and just saw the first one today. Not too late. Just right.

Hummingbirds come throughout the season and are always exploring new possibilities of food. I put up a feeder in mid May and a few weeks later a female ruby throated hummingbird arrived.

Your original message takes me back to the first year I moved here and there wasnt even much grass in the yard as yet. Anyway as I was standing in my yard in comes this hummer and circled my head , maybe my red hat attracted him. I went straight out and bought my first feeder and hung it. Previously to that I was wondering if I was going to have hummers, question answered.

From there it was a matter of building up what hummer habitat I could in my small lot size yard. Last summer had evolved to my best hummer summer ever. During august migration was at its peak and I was blessed with around 40 hummers. So here I am living in a subdivion of small lots and it can be done, it just takes time.

humersteve: Oh! That is such a cool post. People thought I was nutzz, when I told them that on the last day the hummers were here, before they left one year, 3 or 4 of them circled my head, over and over again, chirping like crazy. I was SURE they were saying goodbye, and 'thank you' for the two feeders I always kept crispy clean, and fresh, and cool.

These little magnificent birds DO communicate, much like the house finch. I've had some 'unreal' experiences with them.

Just the other day, I was on my porch, and a delivery guy walked up to me. I thought they were going to rip his hat off. It SEEMED they were protecting me ... God only knows why, but it was unique .. and COOL. = Blessing!!! ;)
