I have the same problem and do not now why...

Seems many of us in many different areas are not seeing the numbers of hummingbirds we are accustomed to seeing this time of the year. The swooping is a mating or territorial display according to what I've read.

I have the same problem here in Arkansas. Maybe it has something to do with the very late freeze we got. Don't know but I had a few, then they seemed to leave last week they were back and now the feeders are staying full again.

It's mating season! I saw a male's "swooping" dance this morning in fact. Males will do a "U" or "J" dance when a female is around and then chases her and I expect copulates if she is receptive. And then the eggs and babies come. Those of you further south might start seeing some juvies soon. If I'm not mistaken, the new juvies start appearing about 6 - 8 weeks after the female hummers first arrive in an area and successfully mate.

I have the same problem here in NY State.. I had 3 but now i rarely see them, sometimes days go by and i don't see anything at all.. I miss them hope they come back soon... =)

I am seeing this too, this is why I looked up the forum, my neighbor and I havent seen any for a week or more, nor has a friend who lives in another county.

Sadly, I had a hummer to visit and the feeder was empty, but I filled it up within 10 minutes, and I hope they come back. It is really dry here, but hopefully/prayerfully, we will get rain this Sunday!! Only 11" all year so far!

If you live in south Georgia where the fires are, maybe they can't stand the smell! We are 250 miles away in west Georgia and have been getting the smoke/smell this past week. Today was the first good day that we could stay outside for any length of time.

It seems a lot of us are having the same problem. I still have not seen more than 2 in the last week. I am in the north Georgia (Atl) area. It is really, really dry here.

I had so many a few weeks ago, many more than ever before.
They must have been on a migratory path or something. I only see a couple occasionally now. I have three feeders and they are changed every 4 days.Perhaps the hotter than
normal weather have sent them further North.

I am having the same problem in Virginia. I saw 3 about 4 weeks agon and have seen none since then, :(

I am still waiting also. Have had feeders out since mid March and except for one (or two?) around the middle of April neither of which paused to drink, just hovered a few seconds,
I have not seen any. Very discouraging ):

Six hummers had been around my yard for several weeks and now only one or two males show up at the feeders. I was out of town for a week and my "refiller" didn't take care of business very well. Could this be why the birds have gone?

I'm having the same problem in MD. I had a few a month or so ago, and then just one solitary male, now nothing for several weeks. This is unusual, as I usually have some stopping by regularly by this time of year.

This has not been a good year for hummers in my area. I usually have 6-7 hummers. This year I have 2. I think the April cold snap killed or redirected a lot of hummers away from the Mid Atlantic States.

Or it could be West Nile Virus. I haven't been able to find much information on hummer sucseptibility to West Nile Virus.

I dont know why you have hardly any visitation , but yes those strange fluttering and swooping are courtship dances and if you see the side to side fluttering I am told that is the most serious for after that the male will follow the female for mating purposes. This year for the first time I have seen these crazy swoops at least a dozen times and I have seen the shuttle dance 3 times. I have seen the male trap females against the house and on the ground. Crazy , but romantic stuff.

I still have mine up here in the sky. I'm thinking at least 3, although for my location at this time of year, that's about what I would get until the juvies come along.

I have reduced my feeders to 7 and changed some feeders out to some they liked better than others. I am getting pretty good activity here. It has been really hot and dry here (drought conditions) and they have been staying at the feeders more than usual...my flowers have gone to heck...no, watering allowed..so all they have are the feeders, well, the trumpet vines and the coral honeysuckles are still making it quite well.

Just started with a hummingbird garden last year. Last fall we had some hummers, I saw only one this spring, but he left after a day. May be the disappearing of the hummers, is linked to the disappearing of the bees?

I am still not seeing my friends and I am sooooo sad. I keep theh feeders clean and fresh, have changed out the locations and nothing seems to work.

We are having the same problem in our gardens in Washington. We did have a record heat wave for about a week and no rain for about 2 weeks in May. All hummers have disappeared except for 3 females. This happens every year once it gets hot for about a week. My Mom used to tell us that the hummers go to the mountains when it turns hot. That has been the case here for years except for the 2-3 that we have always seem to stay until late fall. We usually have about 12 and then babies. Not this year, and no baby males this year either and only the few to begin with. We were wondering if it was the unusual weather this year.

I am having the same problem. I have seen one hummer several weeks ago. I saw him one time. Everything is the same as last year. I do not understand. I am just out side of Charlotte NC. I hope they come back. It must be a weather related problem. I miss them.

Up to 4 hummers here now. Maybe some are arriving late... They don't seem to be fledglings, but I'm not an expert on that.

I'm in Northern Calif and have the same problem. Last year I had quite a few hummingbirds in my yard every day from morning to evening. They were also very friendly because when we would be out in the yard these birds would kinda hover in front of us for awhile and then go back to feeding. Very cute! I also have a Hibiscus tree that they just seem to love. But so far this year, I have ony seen one bird last week and it didn't even hang around! And the only thing flying around my Hibiscus tree are the bumblebees! I have several feeders in my yard as well as many plants that these birds are attracted to but so far nothing. Very disappointing!

From the foothills of North Georgia. Not only have we not seen our humming birds (they seemed to have moved on about three to four weeks ago) we have not seen the number of butterflies we are used to seeing. Our Butterfly bushes are now in full bloom, but no butterflies.

Guys, I am still not seeing a lot of hummers. Maybe one every other day or so.

Hello!! This posted is very intersting! Because...I have noticed with mine problems are so similiar with you guys! Weird!!! I live in Mountain View. The four hummers always returned the feeder in April until frost for three years. This year.. The four hummers came back and then disapeared for three weeks. I kept changed the feeder every three or four days! Yes.. it was quiet waste feeder and hopefully they will come back! It was raining here lots! I was wondering about them. Then three days ago, I walked around my new flower beds. I spotted about six hummers buzzing around the flower bed! I was so surprised! Now.. they are bullies and fighting over two feeder! I think I have six hummers now.. Where they have been for three weeks? HUH??? Yeah.. it is very puzzles!!! And...how can I stop the bullies and fighting over feeder? Kat

Wow... from Southern Illinois here, and SAME problem! Several weeks ago, we had probably 15. Normally by now, we have even more.. like 25. I only have 1. Something is going on or something happened. Maybe it's a weather thing but there has been a definate change of some kind. Our hummers show up every year without fail. Strange.

We have lots of hummers here in N CA. I have always had lots, but this year we have many more. I planted a 1/4 acre rose/flower garden this year and we have had lot more birds of all kinds. We usually have hummers year round as the Anna's stay all winter. I have to keep busy with my 4 feeders all year round.

Im here in central Indy and have about the same every year but I think I have more this year earlier, but I did plant a lot of hummer attracters, first year for that. Im having between 6-10 in the evenings hard to count, didnt have this kind of activity last year till august. This has been going on at least the last 10days.

I had several this spring, but I haven't seen any since about June 1st. I was convinced by another poster that it was because of nesting, but it's July 27th, and I still don't have any. August is usually good for me, but I was hoping to spot some sooner than that.

WOW! Guys, I am seeing more and more now. 4-5 all day long. Actually had to rescue a female from under the porch unbrella. That was funny as she was afraid of me and was trying to keep from hurting her. Finally had to actually turn the umbrella over. She was kinda of stupid, huh. I was just trying to help her (ha, ha).

Novice---you are seeing more now for the younguns have arrived and they are very hungry. Dont know where you are located but here last year they were gone by the end of of august, had only two sightings in sept, so enjoy while you have them.

Hummersteve, you are correct about the juvies. I am near Atlanta and I have one male that is totally in control. He can't keep up with all the chasing and guarding. He has to feed constantly to keep up his energy. They actualy gang up on him, one draws him away from the perch near the feeder and the others feed. I LOVE IT! However, there are 2 other feeders and they won't feed from them. One is exactly as the one they fight over and the other is a glass with perches on it. Any ideas? About 20 feet apart.
Last year it was september when I saw the last one.
