Here's a nice graph showing numbers of ruby-throated hummingbirds banded each day by the bird banders at Powdermill Banding Station. Just click on the link below, and scroll down to figure 2. Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the second bird species on the graph.

By the way, Powdermill is located in southwestern Pennsylvania, in the Laurel Highlands. It's colder there than where I am, so it must be zone 5, or very cold zone 6.

This graph supports what I had been suspecting all along. In my part of the state, although the first hummers may arrive in early to mid April, the numbers just aren't all that great. If you look at the graph, you can see that the peak for them in Powdermill in an average year won't be until the third week in May. That's easily 2-3 weeks after their first bandings in early May. There are some that probably arrive earlier than the graph shows, but so few that they don't find their way into the banding nets to be captured.

So, for those of you in the northeast still waiting and wondering, or who have only seen one or two, better days are ahead!
