Thanks Mimidi - It had lots of spent blooms on it so it should be pretty but I think it's past its prime now. Hope I get to see it bloom next year. Have to get it though the winter first though.
I can't find a pic of 'Prairie Fire' but did find some of just Salvia roemeriana and the leaves don't seem to match so I think I may have an unidentified salvia. The leaves are shaped more like my guaranitica but smaller.

I think my "Prairie Fire" might actually be salvia coccinea 'Forest Fire'. It looks like a match from the photos I've found online. The flowers are sort of a true red, then fade a little bit to more of a watermelon color.

Is anyone getting salvia coccinea to winter over outside in zone 6? It might be similar to 'Lady in Red' and I know some people in this forum have that one. I read that it reseeds too much but hoping it won't here in my zone. I potted up some of the seedlings that were sprouting in the nursery pot. Maybe I can winter those over in my garage or basement and plant them out next spring. Any advice?

Salvia coccinea grows so fast you don't really need to overwinter it. It is however a good idea to get it started indoors in spring. For years I grew it as a reseeding annual and it had a tendency to germinate rather late. Other reseeding annuals like cosmos had too much of a head start and grew a lot taller. Eventually I lost the patch because the bigger faster stuff crowded it out. Lesson learned, and it now gets more elbo and especially head room. In my zone 6/7 garden this plant is a must have, providing a huge June bloom for the hummingbirds.
