I don't think you're being silly, but I would try to have a little more faith in their genetic programming. Those little guys are programmed with everything they need for survival. Do you have any trees, everygreens, tall bushes, thick vines in your yard? If so, they might use those.

I guess it's worth a try, and if you decide to get one, I hope you'll tell us how it worked out.

Here's what June Osborne (The Ruby Throated Hummingbird, p. 43) says makes an ideal nesting site for a hummer:

1. A small down-sloped branch for better drainage when it rains (your branch)

2. Umbrella like protection overhead (the eaves)

3. A water supply

4. A source of food nearby.

She says they do nest in gardens with lots of hummingbird plants.

Be sure to let us know how this works out.

Thank you for the info. The spot I'm thinking of would be an ideal place I think. I have evergreens and bushes on just the other side of my fence and lots of hummingbird friendly flowers in my yard. Plus, a birdbath and a fountain that they enjoy splashing in, so cute!

You are absolutely right though, I have to remind myself that they have been around for a long time, and nature always finds a way! My first hummer showed up December 15th and has hung around ever since (don't actually know if it's the same one...) but they've become such a source of enjoyment. It broke my heart watching all those trees coming down, for the other birds too.

I will report back once I get one set up.

Sounds like your yard is a hummingbird heaven, weekiedee. And a bird heaven as well (with the water).

I always hate to see trees being cut down--the destruction is disturbing all by itself. Especially if you *see* it happen.

But your yard will be a haven for all the displaced birds as well. Water is the most precious and scarce and desperately needed thing of all, and your yard offers them plenty of shelter.

Please be sure to let us know how your branch works out. If it works, I'm sure other will want to try it. Don't give up if it's not used this summer, it might be used next year.
