Oh my gosh, they love containers as far as I can tell. I have from 3-5 plants in a giant container and I'm in love with it. So are my hummers.....they adore it and they suck it dry every day. I'd say go for it. Only problem is the really big pots are kind of pricey.

Trey, I'm delighted that you're starting to get some action at your flowers, and not just your feeders. I'm starting to get some visits to my Monarda didyma "Gardenview Scarlet." At first I saw a female there, visiting only the flowers and not the feeder. Today, I saw a male go to my feeder, and then visit the Monarda. What a beautiful sight! When the male was done with the Monarda, he flew a few feet off to the side towards a pot of Fuchsia "Billy Green." They're similar to "Gartenmeister Bonstedt," but are two-toned pink instead of red. It was hard to see through the trumpet vine foliage framing the window, but I'm pretty sure the male took a drink from those Billy Green blossoms. Cool! So far, I haven't seen any action at my "Pink Panther" Agastache. I might just be missing it, though, because it's not in the best position for viewing.

Was the Salvia B&B you bought at Lowe's labelled? I'm not sure I would know it from other blue salvias. I was able to find what I assume is Salvia coccinea at Home Depot, but it wasn't labelled. How would I recognize Black and Blue Salvia?

Kristin, It was labeled, and its one of those great eye catching plants. It looks like all I had to do was post that the hummers don't come to flowers and nature went to prove me wrong again. I have seen increased activity on the honeysuckle and now these guys at the B&B, I'm sure they checked out the lobelia as well but it has been to wet to spend time outside.

Thanks, Trey. I'm glad to hear they were labelled, so will check out my local Lowe's and see if they have any. Everyone keeps raving about how much the hummingbirds love them, so I feel compelled to try them out. What lengths I go to to accomodate these wonderful little creatures that weigh less than an ounce!

I, too am very pleased with the way the birds are starting to visit my flowers. I certainly enjoy seeing them at the feeders, but I shared your frustration when I was not seeing them at the flowers. I think individuals vary, too. The male (or is it males?) seems much less prone to visit my flowers. Perhaps he's stoking up for his migration and gets more out of the feeder.

My trumpet vine is on the verge of blooming, so it will be interesting to see what the hummers do. There are some buds right beside the window, so I can't wait to stake one out and try to get a photograph.

Waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! My Lowe's isn't selling B&B this year! I purchased two last year at Lowe's, and thankfully I left one in a pot and overwintered it, successfully - wooo hoooo. It's been blooming for a week now. I can't find any B&B locally this year :(
