rembetika - some of the fancy glass feeders have similar port tubes that are removable for cleaning plus they often sell the replacement ports at a places that sell bird feeders (whether local wildlife stores or online).

I am in awe! That man must have a lot of patience to get to that point with a hummingbird! The ones that come around my feeder are very timid of us. If I'm anywhere near the feeders or flowers they're visiting they take a quick sip then fly off nervously... Wow, just amazing.

the male that comes to my feeder is unfazed by me watching, but the females that stop by are very timid and skittish.. if i make any move or stare at them from even a few yards away, they buzz off. but the other morning, a female flew right up to my face, at eye level about a foot & 1/2 away from me (i was standing somewhere else away from the feeder), and proceeded to zip sideways back & forth, looking directly at me going "chip-- chip-- chip-- chip"... i wonder what she was thinking? was she just curious, checking me out?? i wasn't wearing red... it was truly an amazing moment. but i wonder what was really going thru that little head of hers?

What a GREAT video! I've found hummingbirds to be extremely easy to 'tame'. I've always been able to get them to perch on my finger at the feeder, no matter where I've lived. You ought to try it!

Speaking of a curious female....a few years ago, I began to be visited by a squeeky little gal. I was in the habit of getting up veeerry early in the morning, and opening up my back door just to listen to the sounds of all the birds waking up. I'd sit there in the dark, with my dog on my lap, watching the sun come up and listening to the birds. Squeekster buzzed by the door on her way to the feeder, then came to hover at the doorway for several minutes. Squeeking like crazy! The next morning, she came inside just a few feet. The next morning....same thing. Well, by the end of the week, she was swooping all the way into my living room, taking a tour around the whole place! She was especially interested in the fish tank, which was the only lighted object in the room. It was like a little morning promenade.

She would even wait outside the door, scolding me, if I was later than she liked! She'd never come in at any other time during the day, but she rarely missed her morning visit. Would you believe that she showed up the next year, too?

wow, that is the coolest story ever. they really must be intelligent little birds. of course i think all wildlife is a lot more intelligent than humans give them credit for!
i would LOVE to get one to eat from my hand... i'm working on it. i just hate the fact that you can't even sit outside for 2 seconds here without dousing yourself in mosquito spray... yuck. i usually just watch them thru the sliding glass door. i wonder if the smell of chemicals bothers the h-birds?
