P.S. Beacuase we've only been in this new house a couple of months now there is absolutely to flowers planted in my yard yet....JUST the one little hummingbird feeder an old apple tree and some bushes. We are going to buy some hanging baskets of red petunias today for a quick fix.

I believe once they find your feeder, they will return. The problem with my hummingbirds is, they still haven't found the feeders.

CONGRATS!!!

Once the hummies find your feeder and that delectable nectar they will keep returning to it. Swap out for fresh nectar frequently (it's best to put an ounce or two out at a time and clean the feeder often, than to put out a lot and have the nectar go to waste and spoil).

Your house sounds like a perfect spot for morning coffee and hummingbirds. Your feeder will most likely do the trick for you this year. Gives you something to do all winter planning a hummingbird garden.

catwiskas, I'm so happy for you...I'm just now after four summers of only feeders for my hummers trying to get a hummer garden established. Guess what? My hummers still only use the feeders, so I'm sure yours will keep on coming back =)

Jenny, I can relate! Everytime I see any kind of new bird in our yard I go running to get hubby and at my age, that's a feat and a half! Nearly broke my neck on the stairs when I saw a scarlet tanager out the window this spring!!

See, there you go, you're in the game. If you are looking for hummingbird flowers for you garden one of the first places I'd look is around the neighborhood. That hummer probably didn't come just because you had a lone feeder; there's flowers out there somewhere.

I remember visiting a friend of my wifes some years ago in Denver. She had a lot of penstemon in her garden, in fact she found it a bit of an agressive pest. I recall not understanding her attitude at all. Her penstemons were incredibly happy and blooming their heads off. What do you bet your neighbors are growing some? This would also be a good time to visit the local garden centers. Things go on sale now and those $8.00 plants may be marked down to $3.00. Don't worry if they aren't in flower, they may bloom later in the summer and if they don't, next isn't that far away.

It did COME BACK! Hubby and I were barbecuing in our yard last night and sure enough this little hummingbird that visited us on the weekend was enjoying our feeder again last night at dusk. It made frequent trips to the feeder and didn't even care that we were about 3-4 feet from it the whole time. She was soooo close to us we could see she had a red spot on her neck. What a show we had while eating our dinner!

QUESTION:Why did we not hear that loud whizzing noise, that hummers make, as the bird came and went? Because of this we never knew when it was in our yard or not.
