Not quite a hummingbird story, but I was just outside watching for my morning hummer visits. They will often perch atop the high wire fencing I use for tomato trellises. As I slowly walked along my attention went a tomato plant that was growing outside its bounds thru the fencing. I was about to reach for a branch to tuck it back in, only to discover I was almost eye-to-eye with a fledgeling junco sitting on a wire nearly hidden in the foliage. I tried to pass slowly back past him to go for my camera, but he fled...flew up into a fir tree. I knew there were babies in the area, as I've heard their steady chirps (food! food!) both yesterday and today. But it was fun to have the brief encounter.
