After 9 days above 90 degrees here in Minnesota, a cold front brought drier, cooler air and much increased hummer activity. I have a dozen or so at any given time fighting over my nine feeders and flowers. This is my first year at this house so my humgarden is not fully developed yet, but I've noticed hummers especially at my Salvia coccinea and Mexican sunflower, Tithonia rotundifolia. I have more of these plants than others, because they were so easy and inexpensive to start from seed. The birds are mostly attracted to my feeders, however, which I slave over to keep clean and full. Any success I've had I attribute to the feeders and to living adjacent to about 100 acres of privately owned woods along the Mississippi River, which I pray never gets developed!
