Stephen, I just read your article. It was excellent.I enjoyed both the article and the photos. I am trying to build a hummer habitat and appreciate the seeds you sent me last fall. I'm still not sure if they came up, as only one plant that came from hummer forum seeds has any flowers on it. That plant doesn't have flowers that resemble any of the pictures I found on the internet today. The plant has lobed leaves and the flowers are cream colored with almost maroon colored centers. They are very pretty, but seem to be open only early in the day then close up. If I had a good camera I would try to post a picture, but I only have a point and shoot and don't think I can get a close enough picture for anyone to identify it.
I got a bit frustrated when going to the local nursery to obtain already flowering hummer plants. I had a nice list from several on the forum and the nursery didn't know what half the plants were...is it better to go to an online source for the plants? I'm afraid if I do that, I'll end up with dormant plants and any ones like that we have tried in the past didn't live. Seeds are ok, but I know some of the ones I got from you and Helena never made it.
Sorry this is so long, I wish I new of a hummer gardener close by to help me shop and identify plants.
I would love to have a garden that supported hummimgbirds. The few blooming hummer friendly plants I bought (at least they were marked "attracts hummingbirds") were rather pricey and although are still alive, no longer have any flowers on them. I never saw the hummers using them when they did!
Anyway I did enjoy your article, and thank you for being willing to pray for Heidi and her team's safe return.

kudos, stephen, on your impressive, informative and inspiring article! I imagine that it will put the hook in some future hummingbird lovers, and that you've single-handedly increased hummer-friendly habitat wherever folks read it.

Excellent content and presentation!

Hey Stephen just wanted to tell you that while I was outside earlier I saw hummingbirds at the Robert Kemp canna. I was tickled to death. As I planted the cannas in a protected area the wind Saturday night and yesterday did little damage to them or their blooms.

A well written article. It was perfect for the beginner, well organized and easily understood. Congratulations.
