Hummingbird Garden

Wintering Cigar plants ( Cuphea ignea) in zone 8a

Need some help, I have a about 6 cigar plants (Cuphea ignea) currently growing in a raised beds and the hummingbirds are loving them. I will have to leave them planted in the ground during the winter. If I mulch these real well during the winter will they come back next summer?

Any tips or suggestion will be appreciated as these are great magnetics for the hummers.

Hello Chris,

Yes, your cigar plants should have no problem at all especially with a good mulching.

I gave a cousin of mine who recently relocated to Sommerset a couple Giant Cigar plants ( Cuphea melvilea ) and they have come back after getting knocked down by the winter weather.
