twisted and smashed

I have three different hostas (all on the same side of my house) that have been planted there for years (2 stiletto and 1 fortunei aureomarginata) and are looking very sickly.

I would suspect that a cat or rabbit had been sleeping in them, because the are smashed looking. But some of the stems are all skinky, white and twisted and can't support the weight of the plant.

Any idea what is going on?

Maybe they got too cold during our cold snap a couple of weeks ago?

Thanks,

Joan
