Well that sounds like a good experiment to me and if you really think it works you should write it up for "Birders World" magazine. Send in an article and some photos and who knows you might even get a check in return. Could pay for all that sugar! VAL

I have always put 1 cup of sugar to 4 parts water for the hummingbirds here in east Texas and have understood that this is the basic recipe for hummers in general. Your ratio of sugar:water is only 25% of the generaly accepted recipe. Is that sweet enough to mirror that of native nectar in your area? Or did you mean to say that "after" the 1:4 basic recipe you add 1/8 cup more to already mixed?

I just posted another persons quote (I've not tried this). My understanding is that they added 1/8 cup more sugar to the already mixed solution,bringing the solution closer to 3 to 1.

The theory seems to be that if you have a couple different types of HB's,the more aggressive type will guard the sweeter solution placed higher than the normal solution.

Of course,if you have as many varieties as Frank,and have 10 feeders going,the aggressive types can't chase they all off :)
