Hummer in a hurricane
As y'all have read, Louisiana was deeply affected by Hurricane Katrina. Many people in Baton Rouge and points west of the storm still have no power and that's inconvenient and uncomfortable, but it pales in comparison with the devastation in New Orleans, the southernmost parishes of the state, and Gulfport/Biloxi and parts of Mississippi.
I videotaped the storm as a way to remember it all. I started early in the morning and taped a few minutes each time throughout the day and then as it moved on. I had taken my birdfeeders in the night before, because I thought the birds would be busy hanging on for dear life and not worrying about eating...but boy, was I wrong! I had spilled some seed out on an arbor outside and there were flocks of cardinals, finches, etc, even in the rain and wind. But the hummingbirds were the most amazing to me. Front yard and back, they zipped and sipped and squeaked, and when they weren't flying they were perching and rocking in the wind. I caught a few minutes of it...a moment of joy in a time of worry and stress...
