I've seen them chasing wasps alot. I saw one of my female chase the carpenter bees off of "her" B&B. That's gutsy; I hate those suckers. Another female migrator chasing the birds that came into "her" territory. I couldn't stop laughing; it was truly the funniest thing I ever saw, HOSPs bullied by a tiny hummer!

Im assuming by carpenter bees you are referring to "wood bees" Ive only heard them called that. Ive only had wasps and yellow jackets and hate them both. Sept . is a bad month in Indy for yellow jackets being attracted to anything sweet. Well my last sighting was 9-16 and its like saying good-bye to a really close friend,,,,boo hoo

Oh brother, are there alot of carpenter bees/wood bees by me! I can't deadhead my white buddleia or garden near it on a nice day; only when it's raining or overcast. I currently have ALOT of worker honey bees, which thrills me to death ;) They're happy with my one feeder and my sedums.

I've found that the carpenter bees are a bother early in the season and then I get the wasps later. But those carpenter bees really are territorial and I have witnessed many a battle and chase between hummer and carpenter bee. The one thing about that bee though is that they are about the only things around when my blueberries are blooming and are good pollinators, so I'm usually happy to see them in April when the bumble bees don't bother coming up to my spot. It sortof cracks me up when they find a spot to guard their territory and will sit there, chase something that comes nearby, and then return to the same spot:

But they did occassionally try out the feeder, although most times they simply perched on the rail.

So far Ive not been bothered by wood bees . But those bumblebees really like my -Agastache plant. I mean they could hardly wait till I got it in the ground. Im guessing because its color resembles the purple clover they love and I have quite a bit of it around me. They dont go to my feeders thou only wasps and yellow jackets are bothersome there.
