Jurasic Hydrangeas - Desperate for Help

I can't seem to find any help with this problem. My hydrangeas (mostly Endless Summers) are ginormous shrubs. Not pretty because they are overgrown. Last year I attempted to cut them back but that only encouraged them to get even bigger this year. Most of the flowers are at the lower to middle of the shrub. Then there are all these tall shoots of green leaves reaching to 8 ft. They line a pathway that is no longer passable because they grow into and fall into the path leaving no walkway. Whatever I did last year was all wrong. Can I cut them back severely and suffer few blooms for a few seasons or will that just make them grow even more? I realize the root system will still be just as big. Please help if you can. These are right in front of my house and they look goofy.
