Pruning Hydrangeas

Hi all! I read with interest all the information on hydrangeas. I had no idea the care that is needed for these plants. Here is my dilema: I purchased a bareroot hydrangea tree from J&P. It thrived over the summer producing immense gorgeous blooms. The limbs became extremely heavy with the blooms so I had to support each one and tie the trunk to a stake. Some of the branches stnapped with the weight. For a while I paid no attention to it and one day I noticed that all the leaves were shriveled up and the blooms were completely dry. I am worried. I live in zone 7-9 in NJ. I do not know if or how to prune it. Judging from what I read, I'll need to protect it from the winter with some of the methods mentioned. I also noticed that these trees are "bug magnets". Any suggestions?
