technique for pollinating Acer

Hi- I'm interested in crossing different A. palmatum cultivars, or perhaps A. palmatum x circinatum.

What is the technique? I have experience in hybridizing roses. I assume I emasculate, pollinate, cover to prevent other pollinations?

What is the risk of self-pollination? How early do I have to emasculate? What is the best method to cover a pollinated flower?

Any tips and tricks much appreciated. I can't find a thing online.
