Mount Tom

Needed a break from the gardening so what do I do today? Go to a public garden of course, lol.

While there, I of course had to check out the plants they had for sale.

I picked up Mount Tom and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it, this is the first time I've ever seen it and need a little info to figure out where to plant it.

BTW, I also picked up Ivory Coast, Eternal Flame and Earth Angel, couldn't just get one hosta. Also a pair of Chinese Chestnut trees, a really funky looking coreopsis called Route 66. And last but not least, a plant I had to get because of the name, an Echinacea called Pink Poodle. With me, name anything poodle and I have to have it, lol.

Well, I have Mount Tom; however, I just got it this year & has been in the ground only a month.

The only things I can say about it so far:

    It's beautiful.

The slugs haven't bothered it (yet)...and it is planted in a hosta bed with already-existing slugs. If slugs were going to get to it, they probably would have already gone for it.

It did not get affected by the light freeze we got a few weeks ago.

That's all I've got for you a month into Mount Tom. We can compare notes next year.

There's a thread linked below. I'm sure at least two people posted pictures last year. Try the search box at the bottom of the forum page.

Here is a link that might be useful: Mount Tom thread

This is so ironic - I purchased Mt. Tom a month ago, even though I had never heard of it.

I was hosta shopping with my husband (actually, he was just the designated driver) when he pointed Mt. Tom out to me from three aisles away.
Any hosta that catches his eye enough to warrant a comment, automatically gets purchased because "they all look green" to him.

We'll have to compare notes as they grow.

I bought mine last year and it is doing well in a partly sunny location. But it seem to grow slowly. I will post a picture of it when the alphabet pictures get to "M".

Joan, my Mount Tom purchase was an impulse buy based on a mature specimen in the display gardens. Caught my eye from a distance as well.

    Great minds think alike.

I've had mine for several years and it is finally getting some size on it. It is slooow growing but a gorgeous hosta.

I totally agree with Tim. Mount Tom is very slooow, but well worth the wait. Mine is approx. 4 yrs old. It is a hosta you can spot from afar and druel over.

I have had it for several years and really like it. It is outgrowing its spot though and I will move it to the "naughty" theme bed. I haven't found it that particularly slow growing though.

I'm really dense this morning... why is it going to the naughty bed?

Mine is now a nice specimen... gets attention as a large anchor plant in its spot, though most hosta folks assume it is another Sagae and don't give it any special attention. I tested this a couple of times with hosta people this spring, making a general comment and directing their attention toward that bed - confirmed that they just said "Sagae" in their heads and then their attention moved on...

BTW... Mount Tom is one of the many hybrids produced by the Lachmans - William and Ellen. A lot of their hosta names are related to Massachusetts... Brave Amherst, Emily Dickinson, etc. Mount Tom is a State preserve near Holyoke which "boasts an unparalleled view of the Connecticut Valley north and south, the Berkshire mountains to the west and the Pelham hills to the east. Maybe flowerchild59 is using "mount" as a verb instead of a noun.

like mounting a butterfly??? I'm so confused...

Idiothe - When a stallion gets romantic with his mare he "mounts" her and then a colt is born later that season.
