I believe they are. I live in zone 7. Last week I had 6 feeders out and the little hummers were on a feeding frenzy. The males are the first ones to leave. Then followed with some females. Last night I went to my deck to watch them feed thinking it would still be the same, but to my disappointment there were only 7 or 8 humming around the feeder. I only saw females and some smaller hummers which are probably this years hatch. It is like they gased up last week and most are gone. I will miss them this winter. I live mostly in the forest with plently of small insects they can feed on. It is nothing that I do that attracts them (except the feeders) I am convinced it is my location. My city friends were amazed at the hummers that feed at my "bar" LOL

I too am sorry to see them go , and I dont know where zone 7 is. Although I have limited action here I did see one rubyred male today, but mostly females and immatures.

I think they are on their way south thru my garden! We've more than tripled the number we've seen in the past few days. Only one male sighted in the past week..all females and juvies. There are so many now, they are actually sharing the feeders!

Hi Kaye, I know its great to see so many but, obviously those have moved from somewhere else and their stay time will be short. I will have to watch closely to see any, so far today ive only seen two and they were females.

Surely it is too early for them to leave central Oklahoma...we have had a little bit of an early "cool" snap, and it seemed I saw them one day and then didn't see any at all. I thought for sure they had left! But I was so glad to see some this evening! After finally getting to have some feed around my house for the first time, I just wasn't ready for them to go! Hopefully they will stay just a little longer!

Diane , one thing is for sure, when they are gone from central IN. you will still have them. Im sure your state will be one of their pitstops on their way south. Today I saw several females and immatures, but didnt see any males. I could have missed one, I guess. When they leave , its sort of like saying good-bye to a very close friend, isnt it?

I live in Ga. But I am in the mountains where it is cooler than most of the state. I still have some hummers, but this summer I know I had 25 to 30 of the cuties. In the evenings I would see them lite in the trees and watch the feeders(I think they were the males) if another one was there he or she did not like- swoop he would go and let them know what was what. I had 12 feeders out this year, but I am going to spread them out a little more next year. I absolutely love these little birds. I planted three trumpet vines, (the orange) yesterday. You can plant them in the fall or spring. I went to a website to find out what the hummers liked as far as flowering plants. I am going to concentrate on filling my yard with these. Ellen

I am semi-retired so I spend a lot of time at my pc and I have a good view of my four feeders. I live in a new addition, but I have a huge open field across the st and the view is hilly so I sit out my front in evening, imagine that is mountains over there , have a brew and enjoy my hummers. I also have looked up the favorites of hummers and yes trumpet vines ,lillies and that red buckeye. I dont have anything in my yard that attracts hummers but my feeders, but next year I plan to add some

I too am semi-retired. I was forced into semi-retirement, because of health issues. If it had not been for these little hummers, the first few months of my retirement would have been miserable. I did not want to "semi-retire!!!" I have never been a "Yard Person" but now I find myself crazy over nature! My husband was always the one who was a nature person. I guess his love of nature rubbed off. Well, isn't life grand! Could not be happier gardening, birdwatching, crafting, sewing, and being caretaker of my wild birds!

I too have a great love for nature and these hummers. You can always tell when a person is faking it or just so-so about the hummers. Because I too was forced into retirement , I feel blessed that I have these hummers , I could watch them all day. I have really jumped into it this year for last year I only had one or two. The fact I have jumped from one feeder to four shows my intense interest and the fact I have more hummers. There were evenings this summer it seemed I had between 10and 15 hummers. I cant even tell you when the hummers came or left last year, but this year im going to leave my feeders out till Dec. in hopes of seeing a rufous, which will be remote. You are lucky that you have someone to share these hobbys, I dont. Im looking forward to next year and I think I will have more than this year [I Hope]
