Keep those feeders up

You should keep at least one feeder up with fresh clean nectar for if a hummer happened by and your feeder is dry or in very bad shape you would kick yourself. This is the time of year that a possible rufous may come by especially those of you living in very rural wooded area or those of you with a sizable yard with the right habitat. I know I had these hopes last year and maintained a feeder late in the year, but I also did not have the flowers I have this year. Folks you just never know, but if you have a visitor this time of year its a good bet its not a rubythroat, so beware.

Hey Steve!

You are so right about keeping a feeder up for a some time after you have seen you last hummer. You never know what is going to come around and use it.

I have two I'm still feeding. I took pics of the "mr" yesterday. I say "mr" because he's the most colorful. And not shy.

For some reason my hummingbird doesn't care for the feeder instead prefers my firespike plant.

Steve....Oh what great wisdom you have! I'm in upstate New York and by the end of Sept. I had taken my feeders down because as a rule of thumb all ruby throats are gone. About a week ago I had a hummer fly by me so up went another feeder and found out we have an Ana hummingbird here in upstate New York!! Has been verified by Audobon Society as they all have been here taking pics. This poor little "girl" has survived 28 degree temps!

Linda--- Good for you!! I still have one feeder up but as far as I know there has been no action here.

My friend in Maine has been seeing a hummer for several days now. She had to scramble to get a feeder back up and cool some nectar, and fortunately, still has some nicotiana blooming.

Linda, what a great sighting for an Anna to be way over here in the Eastern States.

I sure hope that she has moved on and found her way. I am worried about her.

Hummers were gone. Didn't see any for two weeks. Last Friday one appeared and got lucky. After our summer drought the lady in red salvia coc., pineapple sage salvia elegan, blue salvia guar., and cigar plant (in pots) were blooming. Temps were around freezing at night but used the heated birdbath around 6:30am. Hope it's alright. Trying to get a pic but have never figured out how to post one anyway. Happy hummering to all.

I think my last hummingbird is finally gone! I saw it on Nov 21st, taking some nectar, but then the snow came and haven't seen it since.

I am hoping it wised up and left for the south!

Isn't this late for sighting in Iowa?
