hydrangea no green yet?

Hello

i forget if I am in zone 6? but i put in two nice size hydrangeas (the mophead variety that blooms all summer) and did cover well with leaves the whole bottom of it. I checked them and do not see any new growth yet. the old wood does seem fresh. Is it too early for them to green up? I hope they come back ok

I am in Canton ohio

Of my mopheads, 3 Nikkos were winter protected, 2 Endless Summers were not. 2 Nikkos have been showing signs of green (albiet tiny sprouts). 1 has none yet. 1 large ES is starting to leaf out (it has me worried because I just transplanted it and didn't want it to leaf out yet) and the smaller one has no green yet.

Hydrangeas are slow to wake up in colder zones. Give it a few more weeks.

They can leaf out as late as late May. It is especially hard to predict with shrubs planted the previous year because the wholesalers make them bloom at "the wrong times" and the plants do not behave as they normally should. If you see no new growth or leaf out by late May, get your money back.

Hey Karen,
Have patience with them. Last year mine didn't show sign of life until mid May and yet this year they are almost completely full of new leafs. I think that a part of it is how well established they are. Keep them well watered and don't pruned them down no matter how tempted you may be and they will reward you.
