If they are Annas they probably will be there all winter.

in Federal Way, two hummers continue to visit my feeder

They arrive around 7+ ish. We had 24 degrees and 2-3 inches of snow on the ground. i keep a spare feeder indoors and warming and switch them hourly to prevent hyperthermia. i keep them indoors overnight. i doubled the amount of concentrate-to-water (perky-pet). i keep the feeder close to the un-insulated window. (temps there are about 40 degrees) Also today i helped to keep it warmer by placing a halogen trouble-light on a tripod focused onto the area. They stop coming around 3 PM. The larger one chases the smaller one away. i think they are rufus or allen females.

What Ive heard from you great northwest people is that you have the annas year round, lucky you. Ive seen plenty of pics of rufous and a couple pics of annas and from what Ive heard rufous seems to be a little more submissive to others. If anyone finds this not to be true, please correct me. Im only going by what others have experienced on this forum. Im afraid we only see rubythroats here in Indy except for the rare sighting of a rufous that gets off course for some reason and pops up here, it happens.

I heard they were tough, little birds, but this is a first for us. We live south of Fort Worth and this week we had our first freeze with sleet and snow flurries. It was nasty, and it's still freezing out there. My husband said he thought he was seeing things, but there was a hummingbird buzzing up to one of the leftover feeders from the summer. We quick emptied out the frozen stuff and filled with fresh food, and it gratefully zipped right up for a sip. It's still out there today! It's a female and we mostly get Ruby Throats here. Keep a feeder out all winter just in case everyone!

Writing from Louisville, Ky. here and I also have a winter hummer that flew in the week before Thanksgivng and that is still here even thorgh we have had several hard frosts and temps in the 20's. I have been keeping feeders out for it but I am looking for other tips to help the little hummer stay warm or have enough to eat. Please help me!

I moved a feeder close to a Kitchen window , to get a better look at the Hummers. There's at least two birds , one with 1/2 red band under "his" chin and another, rather bland . Neither appears to resemble the pictures of Annas .Any ideas ?

Hung the light from a Shepards hook,then covered with plastic to keep the rain and snow off the light.

I keep my feeder up all winter, Anna's are always around. I sit out on the patio and the feeder is about two feet from my chair and the little guys come buzzing in and check me out then feed. No fear, after all, it's THEIR yard isn't it?
