What sort of plants are growing around the apartment across the street? They may have rich nectar plants that the Anna's are using right now.

They just have a feeder. No plants. Could they be liking their sugar water better?

I doubt that you are doing anything wrong and since we don't know what they are putting in their feeders it is hard to say if they like their nectar more or if they may possibly just want a little change in scenery You may want to add some nectar plants if you don't already have them. There are a lot of hummer gardeners that live in apartments that also provide plants in containerf for their hummers. There is one girl who is on the 18th floor of a high rise in PA that fills her balcony with plants including shrubs, vines and trees for her hummers.

I think Penny is right on target here. Also, hummingbirds like a small, trickling birdbath to bathe and frolic in. Nectar plants that they enjoy that you can grow in your area is also quite helpful. Don't leave your feeders empty for very long. I have found that keeping them clean and filled on a regular basis will keep them coming. Once the feeders are empty, they will go elsewhere. lots of plants can be grown in containers on balconies, patios etc. Just a few that do well are Cannas (these need lots of water so I put my containers in another container that will hold a few inches of water for them to draw from), Salvia coccinea, Baja Fairy Duster, Agastaches, Salvia guaranitica the species and the hybrid Black & Blue.

Hey Penny--Whatever happened to Roscetta or Roscoe ? Did he move or whats going on with that?--Steve

Roscoa left my house the morning of Oct. 26th. the day before our first freeze. She left just in time since I lost most of the blooms on my salvia that night after she left. I still have two fresh feeders up with polar fleece sox on them now just in case another heads this way. There have been at least two different confirmed Rufous reports in Pa in the last week. Hopefully Roscoa has made it far enough south now to be able to find natural nectar sources. I do know that a few late Ruby migrants have made it to the Gulf Coast in that past couple of days so hopefully she is one of them. I wish i had been able to get her banded before she left so that if she was recaptured I would know where she was and how she faired.
