Interestingly enough, the deer in my area leave the impatiens alone until just before first killing frost. Before I realized the frost was imminent, I was annoyed, but now I just view it as less cleaning up to do. I don't know why they wait till then, but four years of this, and then last year they didn't touch them at all. Mine are in the front yard under spruce trees, in large containers.

Well - I decided to do the Whiskey Barrel after all. Planted a "Vision Pink" Astilbe in the rear, 2 Fuchsia Hybrids on each side, & filled in the rest with multicolored Impatiens (hot fuchsia pink, red, white, salmon, pale pink, & orange).

I have the same problem with deer but I love impatiens so much that I plant them every year anyway. The deer usually leave them alone until the end of the summer so we get to enjoy them for a while. This season I am spraying the impatiens with Bobbex. My neighbors swear by it so I thought I would give it a try. It smells pretty foul so I don't blame them for keeping away!

I'm glad to notice that someone else besides me has a herd that leaves the impatiens alone until the end of summer. I think it's kind of neat that the local deer do that. I never have to look at frost killed impatiens! And I always know when I'd better be prepared for the killing frost. So, at least the d@$*& deer have some usefulness. Almost makes up for what they did to my hostas.

Well so far the deer have left mine alone as well. I've seen little deer footprints all about them, but apparently they don't find them appealing. Well, at least so far (knock on wood).

I have impatiens in hanging pots as well as in the ground, and we have a lot of deer in our area. The deer never bother our impatiens, and I don't spray them with anything. We also have NG impatiens in pots on our deck and the deer don't bother them either.

they are like chocolate covered candy to our local deer here ,,, they leave them alone for a while , but they will eat them down to nothing one night when no one is looking.

bobbex

I use the forementioned Bobbex every 3 weeks and Milorganite in-between..

I've successfully used Milorganite to keep deer away from my emerging tulips, but never heard of bobbex. Is it more powerful? Will it keep rabbits away too? They are worse for me than the deer in the summer.

I have not had any invasion of deer or rabbits, as long as i spray no more than 3 weeks apart. The one time I did not spray i had a few of the tops eaten.
