Mealworms are to big for them to eat. They prefer small flying insects like nats. All you have to do is set some fruit out and that will bring the insects in. Also, you could plant some stuff that attracts the insects. Around here New Jersey Tea works really well as does Mountain Mint.

I agree that meal worms are too big. They just love fruit flies though so put out the fruit close to the feeder.

Thank you for the replies misss and greenthumbzdude. I suspected they were far too large but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I always feel bad because I have other birds covered with insects in the bird food but nothing but a feeder for the hummingbirds.

I always have a few plants that attract smaller bugs in spring, summer and fall but nothing for winter. We have an aphid issue lol and they LOVE visiting my plants.
