They transplant, but first frost will kill them, so I don't think you can overwinter them outdoors. They make great house plants inside in a sunny window, however.

Just cut a few 6" tips of the plant. Remove flowers and flower buds. Remove lower branches with leaves. Put the cuttings in a glass of water and place somewhere warm with no direct light. Then change water daily. In 7-10 days roots will form. Let the roots grow for a few days and then plant the cuttings in pots with potting soil.

These cuttings will turn into nice houseplants. Once the new plants have put out a few inches of growth in the pots (after about 7-10 days in the pots) then pinch out the growing point. Then the plant should branch nicely.

That's exactly what I do, except I don't change the water (maube I should?? so far haven't had a problem.) and I take a cutting that's smaller than six inches. It's lovely having beautiful plants all winter.

In addition to the cuttings, you can bring in the potted plants. A cool room with good light, and easy on the water.

When you plant out or pot on in spring the plants bulk up very quickly for their second year, giving a much better display (IMHO).

Will my impatiens make it thru frosts if I mulch them heavily with pine straw? They are surrounded by purple jew ivy.

My impatients are in the original pots from summer. They sit in a sunny baywindow. I've just left them alone. They are really bushy, but need to be cut back. Can I do that now or wait? My 5 year old geraniums keep on trucking thruout the winter months.

This may be a dumb question, but when you say "pinch out the growing point" what do you mean? (forgive me, I'm a newbie:)

Take of the very top most leaves of the plant. This will cause it to branch out and make it bushier. Just like an animal would do in nature.

I have a friend who mulches her impatiens every year with leaves. She doesn't touch the area all winter - and it amazes me how she uncovers them and there they are! They exploded with blooms when it got warm. This year I did nothing to the area where I had impatiens, just mulched with leaves like she did - I will let you all know what results I got.
