n00b Nikko question

Last year I put a Nikko in for the first time - they seem to thrive everywhere around here and I love them.

I didn't prune it at all (it's still fairly small, although it did have a bloom when I bought it last year) and it was well watered throughout the summer.

However, it's only coming up as new growth this year. We DID have a very cold winter, so did the old growth buds get killed? Alternatively, it's in a spot which is shade/dappled-shade for most of the day except for about an hour of late afternoon soon. I kept it well watered, and it didn't actually scorch, but... could that be damaging the old growth?

Tx for any pointers - I LOVE the enormous hydrangeas I see in every other yard except mine and want mine to grow!
