Gopher perimeter fence

Hi out there in gopher land,

Ten years ago we put in a gopher fence around our big garden (1000 sq ft) consisting of 3 foot deep rabbit cage wire dug 2 feet deep into the ground with 1 foot left above ground. The idea was that the gophers would not be able to dig underneath it nor climb over the top. Well, I think we trapped a few gophers inside because from the start it has not been completely gopher free. Ever so often DH has to trap a few.

The question is, does anyone else have any experience with a fence like this? The other day DH said they were getting in over the top of the fence and once the fence was staked up everywhere then the gophers stayed outside.

What do you think? Should this be recommended as a remedy for gophers? We have loamy sand.

Thank you!

Alice
