mopheads and root competition

Hi-

I have a new hydrangea that I'm trying to find the perfect place for. Its enziandom, and I know I'm likely pushing the bud hardiness, so I want to put it in a reasonably warm/protected spot in my yard. On investigation, however, those spots seem to be harder to come by than I expected! LOL.

Anyway, I'm wondering if it could handle some root competition from a maple tree. I would build up the soil a bit first, like a mini raised bed (I have a lot of ledge in my yard and make small raised beds with rock all around - they don't seem to have bothered any of the trees, nor would this be a large area of raised bed), but I realize the maples roots would eventually grow up into this bed....

Thoughts? I have one other area I'm considering, where other hydrangeas are doing fine, but I'd really rather put it in by the maple!

Thanks,

Lisa
