She would probably be well advised to take care of her baby and forget about the mum. Odds are that this was a florist mum. Although they are beautiful, they are not hardy. They are bred to be grown in a protected enviroment and will not tolerate outdoor conditions -- much like her newborn.

Mums can be purchased so cheaply that it is really a waste of time and energy for the poor results she would get -- unless she is running a commercial greenhouse.
