Ammonia/dishsoap safe use around toads/lizards?

We recently installed a 3 tier pond, mainly to attract toads & lizards for natural insect control. Had 2 toads & a lizard within first 24 hrs the pond was in. Now my question.... I have a book by Jerry Baker that includes recipes for using household products to repel/kill insects & nourish plants. How safe is the use of things like ammonia. dish soap, anticeptic mouthwash, etc? In the process of minimizing the negative impact from insects, I don't want to injure or chase away the toads & lizards.
