Climbing hydrangea flowers

Hi~

I have a pair of climbing hydrangeas that I planted against twin oak trees (facing east) 7-8 years ago. They are 35-40' high, and very healthy looking. They didn't flower the first 3 years, and flowering has been uneven after that. My garden store suggested applying triple phosphate in the spring. I had tons of flowers, but for the first time there were very few of the showy sterile larger white flowers that surround the inner (boring) fertile flowers. This was a big disappointment. Fewer nice flowers would have looked better than all of the barely noticeable greenish discs that we had. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!
