I am not familiar with your iris types. However, most iris have more than on bloom per spike. Give the second one some time to show itself before you prune. Wait until everything begins to brown.

What I am unsure of is where the seedpod even is? The advice I saw said to cut off the seed pod after blooming. I was taking that to mean that you only got one bloom per spike.

What a pretty picture of Dietes. Each stem carries several blooms. Some stems will branch and the display is even more stunning.

Let the current blooms age. As they age, and their pods enlarge/ripen, it will become clear where to snap off the pod. It is directly underneath the bloom but not visable until ripening begins. People use this method so as not to accidently take a bud. As you've discovered! I've seen huge clumps with all their seed pods intact.

Dietes produces very narrow foliage that should remain evergreen in areas where this plant grows. The foliage is seldom trimmed and if it is, it should be cut back to the base on an individual leaf basis.

These are not at all similar to bearded iris types.
